Push/Pull 
Captive Winches
Throughout history winches have pulled. Drums turn. Cordage or wire rope 
winds. Loads move toward the drum — until now. Harken’s Push/Pull Captive 
Reels allow a single winch to move loads in two directions…in/out or up/down. 
This ‘bi-directional functionality’ makes a single Push/Pull captive an intriguing 
and creative choice in large yacht applications where perhaps before two 
conventional powered winches would have been required. One Push/Pull can 
do things like manage complete mainsheet traveler function or move under-water 
foils both up and down. They also show promise in toy garage applications 
or in powering leisure deck extensions that are regularly deployed and must 
be retrieved.
